NAVAirWX Frequently Asked Questions Print E-mail

NAVAirWx uses XM WX Satellite Radio to provide you with the most current weather available on your moving map.  XM WX is a service of XM Radio, who broadcast the weather feed from their geosynchronous satellites.

NAVAirWX was  the first navigation product, developed specifically for aviation, to provide real-time broadcast weather on both PCs and PDAs.  NAVAir is the gold standard in aviation navigation software and provides the full functionality of a moving map and flight planning system, complemented by the best weather information available.

How do I get this service?

When you buy an NAVAirWx package, it includes all of the components that you need to operate your moving map and display the weather. We integrate all the components before we ship them to you and test them to ensure that they work.  As part of our service, we can also activate the broadcast subscription for you.  If you already have a XM WX subscription, we can ship you the components that you need, or you can send us your receiver and we will integrate it for you with the other components.

What components do I need to get XMWX in my cockpit?

You need:

  • A display device (PDA, TabletPC,  EFB)

  • A weather receiver (available in bluetooth or wired versions)

  • A GPS

  • a power harness - NAVair's patent-pending harness powers all your devices with single wire to each device and one wire to the power source, cutting down considerably on cockpit clutter. You can use your convenience plug or wire the pigtail into a fuse.  NAVAir works with power sources from 10-32VDC.

  • NAVAirWX - the award-winning moving map software with integrated real time weather display

We can supply all of these components in a turnkey system, or use the components you already have.

What is the coverage?

The coverage area extends 150 miles beyond the continental United States.

What is the cost?

When and where can I receive the weather feed?

XM WX is a broadcast service, and you can use it whenever you want and as much as you want.  Because the XM Radio satellites are geosynchronous, the feed is available on the ground and at any altitude in the air.

What are my options for weather receivers?

There are both portable and TSO'd receiver options.  The portable receiver goes anywhere you'd like in the airplane.  The TSO'd receiver is installed in the avionics bay and comes with full STC documentation. Both receivers are available from AirGator as part of our NAVAirWx packages.

What about antennas?

There are both portable and TSO'd antennas available.  The portable antenna is designed to be used with the portable receiver.  You should put it on your glare shield where it has a clear view of the sky.  The TSO'd antenna is available in a GPS/Wx combo or a Comm/Wx combo. Both antennas maintain the same footprint as existing GPS or Comm antennas, so they can be installed in place of the existing antenna to avoid pressure vessel issues.  Both TSO'd antennas come with the necessary STC paperwork. We can supply any of these antennas as part of our NAVAirWx packages.

We have found that in airplanes with heated windshields, there can be signal interference which prevents the portable receiver from working properly.  Installed antennas are the best option in these aircraft.

What are the power requirements?

The weather receiver and the computer (PDA or PC) are run from ship's power.  We supply you with our patent-pending cabling harness that provides all data and power connections in one compact package.  The cabling harness works with both 12V and 28V electrical systems.  In the event of loss of ship's power, the weather receiver will not work, but the computer battery should provide you with two to three hours of operation.  This is a sufficient safety margin for operation under emergency conditions. the computer battery will also power the GPS.

We can also supply an optional battery backup, which will provide several hours of backup power to all the components in the event of a power outage.  With this option, the weather receiver will  continue to operate normally.

Mountain Flying with NavAirEFB
Mountain Flying with NavAir EFB - 2006/09/07 02:32 Aside from the moving map with overlay of real time Nexrad Weather, the most impressive flight experience I have had with my NavAir NavPad has been my three flights (and more to come) between COS (Colorado Springs) and GJT (Grand Junction) CO through the mountain passes of the Rocky Mountains.
